Based on sociological studies(1) we think that
strong, clear values are good indicators of a community's
success.
To enjoy the
benefits we talk about, resulting from a high degree of
efficiency, cooperation and sharing, is simply not possible in
tiny groups. And coming and staying together is simply not possible without having some basic
values or similar perceptions of reality which are held in
common.
Some people (especially "alternative people") have a problem
with values and rules, as if having them depersonalizes human
relationships. While we empathize with this fear of
rules and values (born out of experiences with cults and
dysfunctional authority systems), we think that humans need
rules and values to live well together. You would think these
values of which we speak are shared by millions of people, yet
this doesn’t seem to be the case when it comes time to "step up
to the plate" Of course in our opinion, this is one reason why
the world is in the sorry state that it is. It is a state of
affairs which is very easy to
ignore, escape from and in general, be distracted from.

Hugh Gardner.
